Tri-State FPD begins search for new chief

From excerpts on ChicagoTribune.com: The Tri-State Fire Protection District is currently seeking a new fire chief after Jack Mancione recently stepped down just weeks before his contract was set to expire. Eric Habercoss, president of the district's board of trustees, announced that the board has named Battalion Chief Patrick Brenn as the acting fire chief during their recent meeting. The Tri-State Fire Protection District offers fire protection services to portions of Burr Ridge, Darien, Willowbrook, Willow Springs, and unincorporated areas of DuPage County. Mancione took over as chief following the retirement of Chief Michelle Gibson in February 2014. Gibson's retirement deal, which included $115,000 for unused sick, vacation, and personal days along with an additional $22,000, drew criticism from the Better Government Association. Following Mancione's resignation, Deputy Fire Chief William Just also retired. The district has faced growing scrutiny, especially after the Better Government Association highlighted issues involving former Chief Gibson and trustee Julie Strenzel, who were in a civil union and raising a family together. Strenzel did not recuse herself from decisions regarding Gibson's compensation and retirement package. She lost her bid for re-election to Habercoss in April. Recent board changes include Hamilton Gibbons stepping down as president and Bob Jewell taking his place. In August, Trustee Mike Orrico resigned due to no longer residing within the district, leading to the selection of Joseph Wolski by the remaining trustees. In response to resident requests, the board has voted to increase the number of trustees from three to five. However, there is some debate over the timing of these appointments, with Habercoss suggesting they wait until the April 2017 election. At their November 16th meeting, the board directed the district's Fire Commission to move forward with hiring three new firefighters. "We're making progress," Habercoss stated optimistically. Despite these changes, concerns remain over transparency, particularly regarding Mancione's retirement agreement, which is still under wraps. The district is also exploring potential external recruitment assistance to ensure they select a qualified candidate capable of modernizing operations and improving administrative practices.
