Barrington village & FPD may split
The Daily Herald recently published an article exploring the ongoing tensions between the Barrington & Countryside Fire Protection District and the Village of Barrington. According to the report, the longstanding partnership between these two entities appears to be strained, prompting discussions about potentially dissolving their current arrangement.
During a joint special meeting held by both boards, representatives from each side expressed their concerns in what was described as a highly charged session. The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District, which outsources its services from the Village of Barrington to cover an expansive area exceeding 40 square miles, has expressed frustration over feeling restricted in its ability to independently increase staffing or acquire additional resources without approval from the village.
Tom Rowan, president of the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District, stated that they currently lack the flexibility needed to address their operational needs. One specific issue highlighted involves the district's need to replace its aging tender, or water tanker. Due to the lack of fire hydrants in the region, the district urgently requires a new tender capable of delivering water effectively. However, village authorities argue that a smaller tender was approved for purchase three years ago, and they believe no larger vehicle is necessary considering the district's infrequent fire incidents and existing mutual aid agreements with neighboring departments.
Both parties acknowledged that the next step should involve the fire district drafting a formal letter detailing their specific requests along with the rationale supporting those requests. While the current intergovernmental agreement remains valid until the end of 2013, the fire district is pushing for modifications sooner rather than later. Should their demands not be met, there seems to be a readiness on both sides to terminate the partnership. In such a scenario, the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District would either establish its own independent department or seek alternative service providers.
Village trustee Robert Windon emphasized that the village aims to operate efficiently while prioritizing taxpayer interests. He conveyed openness to ending the current partnership if the fire district disagrees with their approach, stating, “If you guys don’t like that, that is perfectly fine. Let us know and at the end of this contract, we’ll all go our separate ways.â€
