Autodesk Settles With ZWCAD

By Amy Bunszel, Autodesk Vice President, AutoCAD Products.

Today, I’m excited to share that Autodesk has reached a settlement in the lawsuit we filed against ZWSoft last year. While the case was ongoing, we couldn’t speak publicly about it, but now that we’ve resolved this matter, I want to give you a bit more insight into how our long-term investment in AutoCAD helped us identify and address this situation.

At Autodesk, we've always believed in the power of innovation and continuous improvement. That’s why we've consistently poured resources into the AutoCAD platform — the backbone of many of our most popular products. We're constantly working to improve performance, connectivity, and user experience for the millions of users around the world who rely on AutoCAD daily.

AutoCAD has long set the standard in the industry, not just in terms of functionality, but also in the way it's designed and used. Some competitors have tried to mimic not only the file format but even the command structure and user interface. To stay ahead, we regularly conduct competitive analyses between AutoCAD and similar tools. When we evaluated ZWCAD+, we noticed an unusually high level of similarity, which led us to take action.

We believe in healthy competition — it pushes us to be better and keeps us focused on our customers. However, when a competitor engages in direct copying, we won’t stand by. We’re glad we were able to reach a fair and reasonable settlement with ZWSoft, which protects our intellectual property and allows us to continue innovating without distraction.

As we move forward, the AutoCAD team is fully committed to delivering new value to the community. In upcoming releases, we’ll keep pushing the boundaries of usability while ensuring full compatibility with third-party applications and Trusted DWG files. We're also working closely with users to make sure each release is as accessible and valuable as possible.

With our new subscription model, we're exploring smarter ways to deliver incremental updates that are easy to adopt and help users transition smoothly between versions. The AutoCAD team will be at AU this year, ready to connect with you, hear your feedback, and continue building the future of design software together.
