**A Case Study: Intertek’s Sustainable Lab Solution**
Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword—it's a strategic business decision. That’s exactly what happened at Intertek, a leading global provider of testing and research services for the automotive industry.
Intertek’s Automotive Research Lab in San Antonio, Texas, is one of the largest independent facilities in the U.S., offering engine, transmission, and emission testing for fuels, lubricants, and fluids. To ensure accurate results, the lab builds engines according to ASTM standards, which requires precise measurements and weight checks before and after testing. This process involves cleaning each component with various solvents like N-pentane, N-hexane, Toluene, Tri-solv, and Acetone.
Handling large drums of these chemicals was a major challenge. Technicians had to manually tip 55-gallon drums to dispense solvents, which was time-consuming, messy, and risky. The gravity-fed spigot system led to leaks, clogs, and spills, creating safety hazards and waste. Plus, draining the drums completely was difficult, leaving residual chemicals behind and requiring extra labor to meet EPA regulations.
Bob Tome, Intertek’s Manager of Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H), was looking for a better solution. After attending an industry seminar on pollution prevention, he discovered a more efficient and environmentally friendly pumping system. It allowed lab staff to safely transfer solvents directly from upright drums at a rate of four gallons per minute, eliminating the need to tip or handle heavy drums.
This new system not only improved efficiency but also enhanced safety. It reduced exposure to fumes, minimized spills, and made it easier to empty drums to RCRA-compliant levels—less than half an inch of fluid remaining. This saved time, money, and resources by avoiding costly disposal services.
What surprised Tome the most was the cost savings. A pump cost about $300 less than a spigot and lasted up to ten years, compared to spigots that needed frequent replacements. Over time, this translated into significant financial benefits.
