Because cobalt sulfide minerals seldom occur alone, often with symbiotic pyrite, pyrite containing cobalt is formed. Therefore, the flotation of copper-cobalt ore is basically the same as that of copper-sulfur ore. There are two types of flotation schemes.
(1) Priority flotation
Preferably, the float copper is then floated with cobalt pyrite. For the ore with cobalt minerals alone and relatively simple symbiotic relationship, preferential flotation can be used to obtain a cobalt concentrate containing about 10% to 15% of cobalt. If most of the cobalt in the ore is present in the form of cobalt-containing pyrite, only a low-grade cobalt pyrite concentrate can be obtained, which contains 2% to 5% or less of cobalt.
The preferential flotation of copper-cobalt pyrite is generally to suppress the pyrite with lime, float copper at a pH of about 10, and use a "starvation" method to add a collector and a foaming agent. The inhibited cobalt pyrite is activated with sodium sulfide or copper sulfate and floated in a weakly acidic or strongly acidic (pH = 3.2) medium.
(2) Mixed flotation
Copper-cobalt mixed flotation, and then the mixed concentrate is separated into copper concentrate and cobalt concentrate. This is the most commonly used screening scheme and is particularly suitable for ores with a close relationship between copper and cobalt pyrite.
The separation of copper-cobalt mixed concentrate is mainly carried out by lime method. In order to inhibit cobalt minerals, the free CaO concentration in the slurry is generally required to reach 900-1000 g/m 3 . Too high will cause copper loss, and too low cobalt will easily float. Sometimes, after floating copper, the cobalt-containing minerals should continue to be separated from the pyrite. The surface of the cobalt minerals can be oxidized by the method of aerating the pulp to achieve the separation of pyrite and cobalt minerals. It has been reported that it is detoxified with sodium sulfide before inflating. After concentration and removal of sodium sulfide, new water is added, and the liquid-solid ratio is 1:1, the gas is inflated for 2 to 3 hours, and the collector is floated to remove the pyrite. The tailings are cobalt concentrate.
