Bridgestone: All raw materials used for tires before 2050 are renewable resources

Bridgestone Corporation of Japan issued a technology that can convert tire raw materials from fossil resources into renewable resources by 2050. The technology is called "100% sustainable materialization." In addition to diversifying the natural rubber production base, the company promotes the cultivation of rubber resources in other areas outside the tropics, and also promotes the development and utilization of biomass resources to produce synthetic rubber, reinforcing materials, and compound materials that are currently produced using crude oil. Speed up the process of practical application.

As regards natural rubber, Bridgestone will establish techniques for cultivating plants grown in dry and temperate regions as new types of renewable resources to ease the concentration of production areas. Research subjects include shrubs such as branches and trunks that contain natural rubber, native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States to northern Mexico, and perennial herbs that contain natural rubber at their roots, originating in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Dandelion."

Bridgestone is also using raw material synthesis technology to promote the conversion of fossil resources from the past into renewable resources. Synthetic rubber will use biomass-derived materials. As the main raw material, “butadiene” will use bio-ethanol derived from biological resources, and the reinforcing material “carbon black” that makes tires black will use vegetable oil as raw material oil, and Biomass will also be used to develop new high-performance rubber materials.

In front of the tire raw materials, the percentage of depleted fossil resources is high, while the ratio of recycled resources and renewable resources is low. With the increase in demand in the future, the use of fossil resources is likely to increase further. Bridgestone therefore proposed the goal of zero fossil resource use by 2050. In the future, the pace of development will be accelerated in three areas: reduction in the use of raw materials, recycling, efficient use of resources, expansion of renewable energy, and diversification.
