Outdoor Grill Maintenance with PGS Legacy Grills

So you've invested in a PGS Legacy Series grill and had a great summer of grilling for friends and family. You know it's important to maintain your grill to keep it running smoothly, but you're not exactly sure how. The good news is that our outdoor gas grills are built for durability and easy upkeep. Keeping your grill in top shape ensures you can enjoy those same memories year after year. While our Legacy models are designed to last, neglecting maintenance can shorten their lifespan.

If you don't clean and maintain your grill regularly, burners can get clogged, grease can build up, and rust can ruin the look of your grill. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered!

Maintaining Your Gas Grill

Maintaining your grill doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require some time and attention. The general recommendation is to do a deep cleaning once or twice a year. However, we suggest doing a lighter maintenance every few months. Marinades can splatter, vegetables can fall through the grates, and grease will accumulate over time. A quick visual inspection can help you determine what needs to be done. It’s best to do a thorough cleaning before the start of the grilling season to ensure everything is in working order.

Grease Tray

For our Legacy grills, we recommend lining the grease tray with heavy-duty aluminum foil before each use. Regularly inspect and empty the tray to prevent buildup. Replace the foil every five to ten uses, depending on the type of food you cook. If your grill has been exposed to rain without a cover, check the tray for water accumulation. Replacing the foil regularly helps protect the tray and keeps your grill running smoothly. Make sure the foil is cool before replacing it.

Burners

Removing and replacing the burners allows for a more thorough cleaning. Before starting, make sure the gas supply is turned off and the feedline is free of gas. Take your time and avoid rushing this process. To remove the burner assembly, first take off the cooking grids and rock grates, then gently lift the back of the burner. Cover the valve openings to prevent dirt from getting inside. Use a stiff wire brush to clean both sides and the bottom of the burner. For clogged flame holes, use a thin wire brush to clear them. A small bottle brush or flexible wire can also be used to clean the venturis.

Cooking Grids

Cleaning the cooking grids is simple. Scrub them with a brass or stainless steel brush while the grill is still hot, before and after cooking. Protect your hands with a barbecue mitt when cleaning. If there’s a lot of buildup, remove the grids and scrub them with a soapy solution. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before putting them back in place.

Stainless Steel Maintenance

Our stainless steel Legacy grills are made in California and are perfect for any outdoor space. Stainless steel is known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, but it still needs care to maintain its appearance and longevity. Neglect can lead to surface damage or even corrosion in extreme cases.

Common issues include rust marks and pitting. Rust marks often come from metal particles like wire wool or carbon steel utensils. These can be removed with a soft cloth and stainless steel cleaner. Pitting is usually caused by bleach or certain acidic foods. Always use approved cleaners and rinse thoroughly after use. Wipe down your grill regularly to avoid long-term damage.

Daily Care Tips

To keep your PGS Legacy grill looking new, follow these daily care tips:

  1. After each use, especially when cooking fatty meats, wipe the grill with a damp cloth and rinse with warm water. This removes residue from the grilling process.
  2. Avoid using harsh abrasives or scouring pads on the stainless steel surfaces. They can scratch the finish and dull the appearance.
  3. Clean along the grain of the polished stainless steel, not across it.
  4. Dry the grill with a soft, dry cloth after cleaning.
  5. Check for propane leaks by applying soapy water to the gas lines and connections. If bubbles appear, there’s a leak.
  6. Always cover your grill when not in use to protect it from the elements and extend its life.
