The development of clean vehicles plays a crucial role in ensuring national energy security, protecting the environment, and promoting sustainable development. It is a key focus of China's "Auto Industry Development Policy." As 2005 marked the final year of the country's "Tenth Five-Year Plan," it was also a pivotal time for concluding clean vehicle initiatives and planning for the upcoming "Eleventh Five-Year Plan." To better understand global advancements in clean car technology, enhance international cooperation, and accelerate research and application of eco-friendly automotive technologies in China, several government agencies, including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the State Environmental Protection Administration, organized the Fourth Beijing International Clean Vehicle Technology Seminar and Exhibition from November 23 to 26 at the Beijing Agricultural Exhibition Hall.
The event showcased the achievements of major science and technology projects related to electric and clean vehicles during the Tenth Five-Year Plan period, as well as the latest technologies and products from both domestic and international manufacturers. Renowned automakers such as General Motors, Volkswagen, Toyota, Honda, and Daimler-Chrysler, along with Chinese companies like FAW, Dongfeng, SAIC, and Chery, presented their latest innovations. Exhibitions from cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjin, and Hubei also highlighted their contributions to the clean vehicle movement.
Toyota displayed its fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly models, including the Prius Hybrid, a cutaway model of the Prius, and fuel cell hybrid vehicles still in development. The company also demonstrated advanced systems such as the D-4 engine and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The Prius, first introduced in 1997, became the world’s first mass-produced and most mature hybrid vehicle, praised globally for its revolutionary reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. Its hybrid power system represents cutting-edge technology, combining high performance with environmental efficiency, setting a new standard in the automotive industry.
Meanwhile, the Hubei exhibition group featured an electric concept car called "Aspire" developed by Wuhan University of Technology. With its unique design, scissor doors, and digital interface, the Aspire attracted significant attention. The car is entirely electric, emits zero emissions, and has been developed with full intellectual property rights. Since its debut last October, it has participated in multiple exhibitions and received positive feedback. It is expected to go into production within three years.
Volkswagen presented the Touran hybrid and introduced the concept of solar fuel, which uses biomass instead of natural gas. This alternative fuel offers lower emissions and direct synthetic oil use, with 85% of COâ‚‚ entering a neutral cycle. According to German company Ludwig Bock Systems Technologies, solar fuel production from crops can yield twice the energy output of biodiesel per hectare, as it utilizes the entire plant rather than just the seed oil. This approach opens up new possibilities for agricultural income and sustainable energy solutions.
Michelin showcased the EnergyXM1 tires, which use GreenX technology to reduce rolling resistance and improve fuel efficiency. Honda also displayed various electric and hybrid motorcycles, as well as fuel cell-powered models. Other provincial pavilions presented impressive progress in clean transportation, especially in the field of clean buses, highlighting the growing commitment to sustainable mobility across China.
