According to recent reports, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) has taken a major step in its acquisition of South Korea's Ssangyong Motor. As per Bloomberg News on December 18, SAIC has received government approval to become the exclusive Chinese buyer of Ssangyong Motor. Ssangyong Motor, South Korea’s fourth-largest automaker, was sold after its parent company, Daewoo Group, faced financial difficulties in 1999 due to a massive debt of $80 billion. The sale involves Chohung Bank and 27 other creditors offering 55.4% of the company's shares. Earlier reports indicated that China Blue Star (Group) Corp. had been named the preferred bidder for Ssangyong, but the deal had not yet secured Chinese government approval.
A spokesperson from Blue Star Group mentioned that the company is still expected to sign an agreement in Seoul next week to finalize the $1 billion acquisition. However, it remains unclear whether the necessary approvals from the Chinese government have been granted.
