15 kinds of alternative pesticides appear in full scale and carry out large-scale demonstration and promotion

In a recent effort to phase out highly toxic and residue-prone pesticides, reporters gathered the names of 15 mature pesticide options from the Ministry of Agriculture's relevant departments. These were identified as the initial candidates for replacement in the ongoing initiative to improve agricultural safety and environmental protection. In 2005, the Ministry of Agriculture launched a large-scale demonstration project in ecologically sensitive areas, promoting the use of these 15 alternative pesticides. The list includes: Fipronil (Frigid), 50% Tiger Frog (a combination of Fipronil and Trichlorfon), 20% Avid + Triazophos, Buprofezin, Acetamiprid, Fenvalerate Ester, Chlorpyrifos, Profenofos, Avermectin, Pyridoxine, Imidacloprid, Bifenthrin, Furanilate Hydrazide, Emamectin, and Indoxacarb (Hits). This initiative aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of these alternatives in real-world farming conditions. According to official sources within the Ministry of Agriculture, more than 70 pesticides are currently undergoing laboratory testing for their efficacy and safety profile. The goal is to identify viable substitutes that can effectively replace the more hazardous and long-lasting pesticides. Once the screening process is complete, the selected alternatives will be introduced on a larger scale. The entire demonstration and promotion program is expected to be finalized by the end of 2007, marking a significant step forward in China’s efforts to ensure safer agricultural practices and protect both farmers and consumers. This move reflects a growing awareness of the need to balance productivity with environmental sustainability.
