Buffalo Grove house fire 9-14-12
The Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded to a residential fire early last night after reports of smoke coming from a home located at 647 Evergreen Place, near the intersection of Evergreen Place and White Pine Road. The initial unit arrived to find visible smoke, prompting an immediate upgrade to a working fire. Additional units were dispatched from Buffalo Grove, along with support from fire departments in Long Grove, Arlington Heights, Palatine, Prospect Heights, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods.
A photo captured by Larry Shapiro shows thick smoke pouring from the roof after firefighters began ventilating the structure. The first arriving crews found the home fully engulfed in smoke, with the fire confined to a second-floor bedroom. Crews quickly worked to contain the blaze, while also searching for any potential victims. A cat was discovered inside and given emergency care by Buffalo Grove paramedics, though several birds did not survive the incident.
Another image shows firefighters preparing to check the basement after venting the rear windows, as they searched for anyone who might still be inside. A Buffalo Grove lieutenant was seen carefully handling the rescued cat, preparing it for transport to a local veterinarian.
The first unit on scene, Tower 25, had two hoselines deployed immediately. However, the primary hydrant was not functional, so a backup water source was used to supply the tower ladder.
