Coking crude benzene hydrogenation localization process equipment put into production

Recently, Shanxi Taihua Group successfully launched its domestically developed 80,000 tons/year crude benzene hydrogenation unit along with the full plant supporting project in a single batch. This state-of-the-art facility is expected to produce 56,400 tons of pure benzene, 12,000 tons of toluene, and 0.3 tons of xylene annually. The project marks a significant breakthrough in addressing long-standing issues in traditional coking crude benzene refining, such as environmental pollution and low product quality, which have plagued the industry for years. It's worth noting that the refining of coking crude benzene is a fundamental process in the coal chemical industry. As one of China's top coking provinces, Shanxi accounts for approximately one-fifth of the country’s total coking crude benzene production. However, the conventional acid-washing method has been problematic, generating large amounts of difficult-to-dispose acid tar, leading to severe environmental damage and substandard products. Due to these issues, the old technology has been officially banned by the government and must be phased out within a specific timeframe. To address this, Taihua Group partnered with Shanghai Baosteel Group and Zhejiang Meiyang Design Institute to implement an advanced crude benzene hydrogenation technology independently developed in China. They constructed an 80,000-ton/year project designed to handle 300,000 tons/year of coking crude benzene. The successful commissioning of the facility demonstrates that China has achieved full maturity in the domestic production of coking crude benzene hydrogenation technology, marking a major milestone in the country’s energy and chemical industry development.
