The Xingfa Group's waste salt alternative to sodium nitrate was tested successfully
In a recent development, the fifth sodium plant at Baihua No. 1 Plant of Yichang Xingfa Group in Hubei Province has successfully replaced sodium nitrate with sodium sulfoxide in Sinochem’s production process. This transition was supported by the installation of advanced production equipment valued at over 400,000 yuan, which was achieved through process optimization and technological upgrades. As a result, product quality and stability have significantly improved, meeting all customer requirements effectively.
Meanwhile, the sulfoxide plant at Baihua No. 2 Plant of the group generated a large volume of sulfoxide waste salt during DMSO production. Previously, this waste was transported to designated landfills, which not only required significant labor and resources but also posed environmental challenges. In response, the group quickly initiated a feasibility study on replacing sodium sulphoxide with spent sulphoxide, eventually producing a comprehensive report on the recycling of waste sulphides.
During the project implementation, Xingfa Group made several process and equipment improvements based on risk assessments and control measures. After one month of trial testing, the project achieved a complete replacement of sodium nitrate with sulfoxide waste salt. Additionally, it enhanced the working environment for neutralization operators and reduced their workload. The team also used urea, phosphoric acid, and sulfoxide waste salts to produce disodium hydrogen phosphate. This approach effectively reduced the presence of easily oxidizable substances (like nitrites) in the waste salts, generating environmentally friendly nitrogen and carbon dioxide. It also improved the main component content and apparent density of the final product.
It is estimated that Baihua No. 2 Plant produces approximately 7.5 tons of sulfoxide waste salt daily. However, the current capacity of one plant can only handle 5 tons per day. To address this, the Liucaopo Chemical Plant also adopted the same technology and has already started full-scale production. Now, the two factories together can fully consume all the sulfoxide waste salts produced in the Baihua Plant’s operations.
This innovative waste recycling technology has not only saved more than 2 million yuan in raw material costs for the group but has also significantly alleviated environmental pressures, showcasing a sustainable and economically viable solution.
