Hangzhou Water Treatment Center wins more than ten demonstration projects with a capacity of over 5,000 tons by virtue of its technical superiority

The Hangzhou Water Treatment Technology Development Center, under the State Oceanic Administration, is a key research and development hub in China for liquid separation membrane technology. It serves as a critical platform for scientific innovation, technology transfer, and large-scale industrial application, as well as an international technical exchange center. The center specializes in membrane desalination and industrial water treatment technologies, with over two decades of dedicated work leading to significant achievements in seawater desalination, chemical separation, clean production processes, and wastewater reuse. Wang Shougen, the deputy director of the center, emphasized that their expansion beyond Zhejiang province is driven by their strong technological foundation. The center has assembled a top-tier team, including one academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and eight national special allowance experts. In the field of industrial water treatment, they have successfully implemented more than ten demonstration projects with capacities exceeding 5,000 tons, covering areas like chemical process water, boiler feed water, and cooling water reuse. In China, electroplating plants generate approximately 4 billion cubic meters of wastewater annually, but traditional methods often fail to address heavy metal pollution effectively. Despite billions of yuan invested in treatment projects, challenges remain. In 2000, a high-tech company in Changsha sought the Hangzhou center’s help to treat foam nickel wastewater using integrated membrane technology, aiming to solve the long-standing issue of heavy metal ion emissions. This project marked the first large-scale application of domestic technology for electroplating wastewater recycling, presenting both technical complexity and financial risk. To prove their capabilities, the center took on the project without any upfront payment. Through rigorous analysis, on-site testing, and parameter optimization, the center successfully separated noble metal nickel from the wastewater, achieving a recovery rate of over 95%. The treated water was reused in the production process, reaching a reuse rate of more than 95%. Experts confirmed that the technology reached international advanced standards, offering a practical solution for zero-discharge treatment in electroplating industries. Following this success, the center expanded its zero-emission solutions across the domestic electroplating sector, achieving remarkable results. In 2002, Henan Yishi Fiber Co., Ltd. launched a major project to recycle 14,400 tons of water daily, the largest in China’s chemical air-cooled water reuse field. The Hangzhou center won the bid with a clear advantage, introducing membrane cleaning technology to treat viscose fiber wastewater—a challenge previously unsolvable with conventional methods. The project achieved high water reuse rates and produced high-quality leaching water at a cost of less than 1.9 yuan per ton, significantly lower than tap water-based pure water. With such cutting-edge technology, the Hangzhou Water Treatment Center has become a leading force in domestic membrane separation research and industrialization, undertaking numerous water and wastewater treatment projects nationwide. Its innovative approach continues to shape the future of sustainable water management in China.
