Hangzhou Water Treatment Center wins more than ten demonstration projects with a capacity of over 5,000 tons by virtue of its technical superiority

The Hangzhou Water Treatment Technology Development Center, under the State Oceanic Administration, stands as a key hub for research, development, and industrial application of liquid separation membrane technology in China. It serves as both a national and international technical exchange platform, focusing on membrane desalination and industrial water treatment technologies. After two decades of dedicated efforts, the center has developed numerous significant achievements and proprietary knowledge in seawater desalination, chemical separation, clean production processes, and wastewater reuse. When asked about expanding business beyond Zhejiang Province, Wang Shougen, the deputy director, emphasized that their success is driven by strong technological capabilities. The center boasts a team of top-tier professionals, including one academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and eight national special allowance experts. In the industrial water treatment sector, it has established over ten demonstration projects with capacities of 5,000 tons or more, covering areas such as chemical process water, boiler feed water, and cooling water reuse. China’s electroplating industry discharges approximately 4 billion cubic meters of wastewater annually, and traditional methods like chemical treatment have failed to address the pollution effectively. Despite billions of yuan invested in wastewater treatment, challenges remain. In 2000, a high-tech company in Changsha sought help from the Hangzhou Water Treatment Center to tackle heavy metal ion emissions from foam nickel production using integrated membrane technology. This marked the first large-scale project in China to apply state-owned technology for electroplating wastewater treatment and recycling. The project was technically challenging and risky, so the company demanded payment only after the investment was recovered. To prove its capabilities, the center accepted the project without any upfront payment. The center's technicians conducted thorough analysis and on-site testing, collecting various parameters. Leveraging years of technical expertise, they successfully separated noble metal nickel from the wastewater using membrane-integrated technology, achieving a nickel recovery rate of over 95%. The treated wastewater was reused in the process, with a reuse rate exceeding 95%. Experts confirmed that the technology reached an internationally advanced level, providing a practical and feasible solution for achieving zero discharge in electroplating wastewater treatment. Since then, the center has promoted this zero-emission process across the domestic electroplating industry, achieving remarkable results. In 2002, Henan Yishi Fiber Co., Ltd. planned to build a large-scale water recycling project with a daily capacity of 14,400 tons, the largest in China’s chemical air-cooled water reuse field. Through a competitive bidding process, the Hangzhou Water Treatment Center won the contract with clear advantages. For the first time, the center applied membrane cleaning technology to recycle viscose air-cooled wastewater, solving a long-standing issue in the viscose fiber industry. Most of the wastewater was reused, and high-quality leaching water was produced from it. The comprehensive cost was less than 1.9 yuan per ton, which is 0.7 yuan cheaper than producing pure water from tap water. With such outstanding technical strengths, the Hangzhou Water Treatment Center has undertaken numerous domestic water and wastewater treatment projects, becoming a leading research and development center and industrialization base in the membrane separation field in China.
