Prospect Heights Fire Department history

Bill Friedrich recently shared an image with his collection, and he reached out to Drew Smith for help in determining the photo's age. The image below shows the Prospect Heights Fire Department, and Drew confirmed that it dates back to 1963. ![Prospects Fire Department history](#) Here’s what Drew had to share: “I’ve verified that the photo is from 1963. When the station was originally constructed, a neon sign reading 'FIRE DEPARTMENT' was placed above the overhead door. This was later swapped out for red letters spelling 'PROSPECT HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT.' The photo Bill found features the updated lettering. Additionally, the paint store sign visible to the left suggests this is a more recent image since that paint store was around until the construction of the new Walgreens. I also have pictures showing the newer red PHFD lettering with a different tenant occupying the former paint store space. Furthermore, when the station was initially built, there was no curb separating the road from the apron—it was just a gravel transition.” Below are some key details about three significant pieces of equipment: | Year | Type | Signature(s) | Make/Mfr. | Pump GPM | Tank | Other | |------|-------------|----------------|--------------|----------|----------|-----------------------------| | 47 | Pumper | #3 | Ford/Darley | 750 | 500 | Purchased new | | 48 | Car | #4 | Ford | | | “Pie wagon” | | 57 | Car | ? | Ford | | | Red & white wagon used by fire chief | The station wagon served as the chief’s vehicle and would have been used by the first two chiefs. There have only been four chiefs in the history of the PHFD: - Fran Foor (1944-1962), who served as president of the IL Fire Chiefs Association in 1954 - William Andrew (1962-1969) - Donald Gould, Sr. (1969-1988) - Donald Gould, Jr. (1988-present) Based on the license plates, I estimate this photo was taken in 1963. According to [this webpage](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_Illinois), Illinois license plates in 1963 were dark green with gold letters, which matches what we see here. The red and white 1957 Ford was replaced in 1966 with a Chevrolet Impala station wagon. Between 1964 and 1968, the PHFD acquired three new pieces of equipment: | Year | Type | Signature(s) | Make/Mfr. | Pump GPM | Tank | Other | |------|-------------|----------------|--------------|----------|----------|--------------------------------------| | 64 | Squad | #5 | Chevy | | | Utility body truck, breathing air cascade, generator | | 66 | Pumper | #2 | Ford/Darley | 750 | 1000 | Twin high-pressure booster reels | | 68 | Tanker | #6 | Ford/Darley | 750 | 1500 | | The 1947 Ford Darley pumper stayed in service until sometime in the 1970s. In 1973, the department bought a new Dodge station wagon for the chief, a Ward LaFrance pumper, and its first ambulance built on a Dodge van. Attached are a few additional photos: ![Prospect Heights FD 1957 chief's car](#) - This looks like the 1957 Ford when it was brand new. The red license plate with white letters is from 1957. ![Prospect Heights FD 1948 Ford van](#) - This is the 1948 Ford "pie wagon" (as referred to by all the old-timers when I joined, even though it had long been retired). It has been beautifully restored by someone in the NW suburbs (though I don't have any contact information).
