Prospect Heights Fire Department history
Bill Friedrich recently shared an image with his collection, and he reached out to Drew Smith for help in determining its age. The picture below is the one he contributed.
[Image description: A black-and-white photograph showing a fire station with a distinctive "PROSPECT HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT" sign above the garage door. A painted sign for a local paint shop is visible to the left.]
Drew responded with some valuable insights:
"I've verified that this photo dates back to 1963. When the station was originally constructed, it featured a neon sign reading 'FIRE DEPARTMENT' above the main entrance. This was later swapped out for the current red lettering of 'PROSPECT HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT.' The photo Bill has clearly shows the updated signage. Additionally, the paint store sign on the left confirms this is a more recent shot since that particular store was only around until the new Walgreens was built. I also have earlier images where the older neon sign is still visible along with different businesses occupying the paint store space. Furthermore, the original design of the station didn't include a curb separating the road from the parking area—it was just a gravel transition."
Here are some additional notes about key moments in the department's history:
| Year | Type | ID # | Manufacturer | Pump Capacity (GPM) | Tank Capacity (Gallons) | Additional Notes |
|------|----------|------|--------------------|---------------------|-------------------------|------------------------------------------|
| 1947 | Pumper | #3 | Ford/Darley | 750 | 500 | Purchased new |
| 1948 | Car | #4 | Ford | N/A | N/A | Known as the "Pie Wagon" |
| 1957 | Car | ? | Ford | N/A | N/A | Red and white vehicle used by the chief |
The station wagon served as the chief's vehicle during those early years. Over time, the department had only four chiefs:
- Fran Foor (1944-1962), who served as president of the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association in 1954.
- William Andrew (1962-1969).
- Donald Gould, Sr. (1969-1988).
- Donald Gould, Jr. (1988-present).
Based on the license plate style, I estimate this photo was taken in 1963. According to the Wikipedia page on Illinois vehicle registration plates, in 1963, the plates were dark green with gold lettering—exactly what we see here.
Around 1966, the 1957 Ford was replaced with a Chevrolet Impala station wagon. Between 1964 and 1968, the Prospect Heights Fire Department acquired three new vehicles:
| Year | Type | ID # | Manufacturer | Pump Capacity (GPM) | Tank Capacity (Gallons) | Additional Notes |
|------|----------|------|--------------------|---------------------|-------------------------|------------------------------------------|
| 1964 | Squad | #5 | Chevy | N/A | N/A | Utility truck with breathing air cascade and generator |
| 1966 | Pumper | #2 | Ford/Darley | 750 | 1000 | Twin high-pressure booster reels |
| 1968 | Tanker | #6 | Ford/Darley | 750 | 1500 | N/A |
The 1947 Ford-Darley pumper stayed in service until sometime in the 1970s. By 1973, the department added a new Dodge station wagon for the chief, a Ward LaFrance pumper, and their very first ambulance built on a Dodge van.
Attached are a couple of additional photos for reference:
[Image description: A pristine 1957 Ford with a red license plate featuring white letters.]
"This seems to be the 1957 Ford when it was brand new. The red plate with white letters corresponds to 1957 registration."
[Image description: A 1948 Ford van painted in red and white, looking well-maintained despite its age.]
"This is the 1948 Ford 'Pie Wagon,' as it was affectionately called by veterans of the department even after it was retired. Someone in the northwest suburbs lovingly restored this vehicle, but no contact information is available."
Best regards,
Drew Smith
