Recently, the European Union launched an innovative research initiative called CREATE 3S, backed by a total investment of 4.2 million euros, with 2.5 million euros coming from EU funding. This project brings together leading companies in offshore shipping and ship design to develop next-generation offshore vessels that aim to boost the competitiveness of Europe’s maritime industry. By leveraging advanced engineering and construction methods, the project is set to revolutionize how cargo is transported across international waters.
The core concept of CREATE 3S involves a modular ship design, consisting of a main hull and one or more large cargo modules. This allows for efficient unloading at ports, significantly reducing turnaround time and enabling faster preparation for subsequent voyages. The vessel will be versatile enough to carry various types of cargo, including containers, bulk materials, and liquids such as refined oil, chemicals, and liquefied gases.
What makes CREATE 3S stand out is its ability to load and transport massive cargo units in a single operation. Unlike traditional container ships, which typically carry smaller, standardized containers, this new design enables the transportation of much larger cargo modules—potentially even multiple types of goods on the same ship. This flexibility could greatly improve efficiency and reduce the need for multiple transfers during the supply chain.
By integrating "standard ship design" with modular cargo systems, the project aims to streamline production processes and lower costs. Advanced construction techniques and industrialized module integration are expected to cut shipbuilding costs and shorten delivery times by around 10%. Additionally, the use of advanced simulation technologies will enhance operational planning and performance optimization.
With growing trade between European nations and rising costs for road and rail transport, offshore shipping has become a more attractive and environmentally friendly alternative. As a result, waterborne freight is gaining increasing support across the continent. CREATE 3S represents a significant step forward in making European shipping more efficient, sustainable, and competitive in the global market.
