EU funds to develop new offshore transport vessels

Recently, the European Union launched a groundbreaking research initiative called CREATE 3S, backed by a total investment of 4.2 million euros, with 2.5 million euros coming directly from the EU. This ambitious project brings together leading companies in offshore shipping and ship design to develop next-generation offshore carriers. The goal is to boost the competitiveness of the European maritime industry by leveraging cutting-edge design and construction methods. The CREATE 3S concept introduces a modular ship design that consists of two main components: a hull section and one or more large cargo modules. This innovative structure allows for rapid cargo transfer at ports, enabling the ship to quickly unload and prepare for its next voyage. The system is versatile, capable of transporting a wide range of goods, including containers, bulk cargo, and liquids such as refined oil, chemicals, and liquefied gases. One of the most exciting features of the project is the ability to load all cargo in one go. Unlike traditional ships that carry multiple smaller containers, CREATE 3S can transport large, standardized cargo units—some of which will be significantly larger than the current largest 45-foot or 20-foot containers. This flexibility makes it possible to carry different types of cargo on the same vessel, including a mix of bulk and containerized goods. By integrating "standard ship design" with modular cargo systems, the project aims to streamline production and reduce costs. Advanced construction technologies will be used alongside large-scale standardized modules, promoting industrialization in shipbuilding. As a result, both construction costs and delivery times are expected to improve, with an estimated 10% reduction in overall delivery time. Furthermore, the new ships will be operated using advanced simulation techniques, enhancing efficiency and safety during navigation. With increasing trade between European countries and rising costs for road and rail transport, offshore shipping has become a more attractive and environmentally friendly alternative. As a result, water-based freight is gaining support across Europe, making projects like CREATE 3S essential for the future of sustainable transportation.
