Charity Police vs Fire boxing match

The Courier-News has a story about a charity boxing event taking place this weekend:

As the third annual Tuition Knock Out approaches, the Aurora chapter of the National Latino Peace Officers Association (NLPOA) is stepping up its game. This year’s event will be held at East Aurora High School, moving to a bigger venue in an effort to raise more scholarship money for local students. The goal? To provide a full ride to community college for one deserving individual.

The scholarship is no small feat—recipients get two full years of tuition at either Waubonsee Community College or Elgin Community College, allowing them to earn an associate's degree without any out-of-pocket costs. That’s a big deal, especially in today’s economic climate.

This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever. It kicks off with 15 amateur fights organized by Jesse “The Law” Torres Boxing Club, followed by eight exhibition matches featuring police and fire department members from Aurora, Elgin, and surrounding areas. These matches aren’t just for show—they’re a celebration of service, pride, and community spirit.

Aurora Police Sgt. Alfredo Dean, who leads the NLPOA chapter, explained that the shift to offering a full scholarship was made to give students the best possible chance at success. “We want the recipient to not have to spend a penny,” he said. Last year, Cristina Martinez received full tuition to Elgin Community College through funds raised at the event. Since 2012, the Tuition Knock Out has awarded over $15,000 in scholarships, with last year’s event alone bringing in $20,000.

Of course, a boxing event wouldn’t be complete without some action. This year’s main event features a high-stakes match between Aurora Police Investigator Erik Swastek and Aurora Fire Lt. Jeremy Allway, both hoping to walk away with bragging rights. Another familiar face is Aurora Alderman Richard Irvin, who previously fought in the event but lost by decision. He’ll be back this time, ready to take on another challenge.

The event takes place on Sunday at East Aurora High School. Doors open at 1:30 p.m., with amateur bouts starting at 2 p.m. Exhibition matches are scheduled for 5 p.m. The fight card includes a variety of local law enforcement officers, including Dave Sharp (Woodstock Police), Eric Echevaria (Elgin Police), Greg Christoffel (Aurora Police), Lorena Hernandez (Aurora Police), Miriam Uribe (Elgin Police), Richard Irvin (Aurora Alderman), and many more.

Tickets are available for $15 for adults and $5 for children aged 6–12. VIP seating is also available for $50. You can purchase tickets online at https://ticketriver.com/event/13048. For more information about the NLPOA scholarship program, visit http://www.nlpoa.com/?Aurora.
