The Courier-News recently published an article highlighting a heartwarming charity boxing event: As the third annual Tuition Knock Out approaches, the Aurora chapter of the National Latino Peace Officers Association (NLPOA) has taken its fundraising efforts to the next level. This year's event will be held at East Aurora High School, marking a move to a larger venue aimed at raising more scholarship money for deserving local students. The scholarship on offer is nothing short of impressive: it covers two full years of tuition at either Waubonsee Community College or Elgin Community College, allowing recipients to earn an associate’s degree without any out-of-pocket expenses. This year’s event promises a mix of action and community spirit. It kicks off with 15 amateur boxing matches organized by Jesse “The Law†Torres Boxing Club, followed by eight exhibition bouts featuring police and fire department members from Aurora, Elgin, and surrounding areas. The main event will see Aurora Police Investigator Erik Swastek face off against Aurora Fire Lt. Jeremy Allway in what’s expected to be an exciting showdown. Aurora Police Sgt. Alfredo Dean, president of the NLPOA chapter, explained that the organization made the switch from smaller scholarships to a full-ride opportunity in order to give students the best chance at success. "We want them to have no financial barriers when it comes to education," he said. Last year’s event helped fund a full scholarship for Cristina Martinez, who attended Elgin Community College using funds raised during the event. Since 2012, the Tuition Knock Out has awarded over $15,000 in scholarships, with last year’s event alone raising $20,000. One of the most anticipated aspects of the night is the exhibition fights, which bring together local first responders in a fun and competitive atmosphere. Among them is Aurora Alderman Richard Irvin, who previously took part in the event and lost by decision in a tough match last year. This time around, he’s back for more—and so are several other familiar faces. The event will take place on Sunday at East Aurora High School. Doors open at 1:30 p.m., with the first amateur fights starting at 2 p.m. Exhibition matches will begin at 5 p.m. Tickets are priced at $15 for adults and $5 for children aged 6 to 12. VIP seating is available for $50. You can purchase tickets online at https://ticketriver.com/event/13048. For more information about the NLPOA scholarship program, visit http://www.nlpoa.com/?Aurora.
