Autodesk and The LEGO Group Partner to Deliver First Ever Mobile 3D Building Instruction App for the new MINDSTORMS® EV3

Earlier this year, The LEGO Group and Autodesk made waves in the tech and toy industries by announcing their exciting partnership. Their collaboration sparked something truly innovative—Autodesk developed interactive 3D building instructions specifically for the LEGO MINDSTORMS series of programmable robots. On September 1, 2013, these cutting-edge instructions became available through the LEGO MINDSTORMS 3D Builder App, powered by Autodesk Inventor Publisher. This app, compatible with both iOS and Android tablets, seamlessly integrates with LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3, the third-generation robotics product. Replacing traditional paper instructions, the 3D interactive guides provide users with a digital way to explore and manipulate LEGO components during the assembly process. For instance, users can zoom in, rotate the model, or pause animations to get a clearer understanding of how pieces fit together. This feature is especially helpful when building complex robotic designs. Camilla Bottke, the MINDSTORMS project manager at LEGO, noted, "Building a MINDSTORMS robot is inherently three-dimensional. Many kids today don’t separate physical and digital play, so having these digital tools alongside the physical set makes the whole experience much more intuitive." The launch of MINDSTORMS EV3 also brought along a vibrant online community hub at www.LEGO.com/mindstorms. Here, users can create profiles, share their creations, and connect with others in the MINDSTORMS community. The 3D Builder instructions are also accessible via a web browser on this platform, eliminating the need for extra downloads. To celebrate the release, LEGO MINDSTORMS organized a lively event at the SOMA StrEAT Food Park. The event featured the MINDSTORMS-sponsored SparkTruck, which has been traveling across the U.S., inspiring kids to embrace their creativity. The Stanford Design School's mobile lab was showcased, and expert panel members demonstrated the 17 hero and bonus models of the new EV3 lineup. Local tech giants like Facebook, Pandora, and Yahoo! participated in a friendly competition, racing to build and program a robot inspired by the San Francisco Bay Area. The Autodesk Instructables team joined in, creating a robot that humorously reflected the city’s fast-paced lifestyle—constantly distracted by its "iPhone," it bumped into everything around it. This collaboration not only enhances the building experience but also fosters a global community of creators and innovators.
