Autodesk and The LEGO Group Partner to Deliver First Ever Mobile 3D Building Instruction App for the new MINDSTORMS® EV3
When The LEGO Group teamed up with Autodesk earlier this year, they posed a fascinating question: What could make robots even cooler? This collaboration eventually led to the creation of cutting-edge 3D interactive building instructions for the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® series of programmable toy robots. On September 1, 2013, these instructions became available to customers through the LEGO MINDSTORMS 3D Builder App Powered by Autodesk® Inventor® Publisher, which is compatible with both iOS and Android tablets. This app complements the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3, the third-generation robotics product from LEGO.
The 3D building instructions offer an exciting alternative to traditional paper guides. They enable MINDSTORMS users to virtually explore and interact with the LEGO components of all five EV3 hero models throughout the building process. This makes assembling these sometimes complex robots much easier. In this immersive 3D environment, users can zoom in on individual parts, rotate the model, or pause the animation to get a clear understanding of how pieces fit together.
Camilla Bottke, the MINDSTORMS project manager at LEGO, explained, "Building a MINDSTORMS robot means constructing from every angle, so it's inherently 3D. Many children today don't separate physical and digital play, so having digital building instructions alongside the physical model, complete with the ability to rotate and zoom in 3D, makes the whole process more intuitive."
The launch of MINDSTORMS EV3 also introduced a vibrant social media hub at www.LEGO.com/mindstorms. This platform allows users to create profiles, showcase their creations, and engage with other builders. The 3D Builder instructions are also accessible directly on the MINDSTORMS community hub via a web browser, eliminating the need for additional downloads.
To celebrate the launch, LEGO MINDSTORMS organized a Robo Lunch Event at the SOMA StrEAT Food Park. The event featured the MINDSTORMS-sponsored SparkTruck, a mobile lab that has traveled across the country this summer inspiring kids to embrace their inner maker. Operated by Stanford University's Design School, SparkTruck was present to display its offerings while expert panel members demonstrated the 17 MINDSTORMS EV3 hero and bonus models.
The event also highlighted several innovative local companies such as Facebook, Pandora, and Yahoo!, who had early access to the new kits. These companies participated in a LEGO robot-building challenge, creating robots inspired by the San Francisco Bay Area. The Autodesk Instructables team joined in, crafting a robot that humorously reflected San Francisco culture—a device so engrossed in its phone that it kept bumping into things.

This initiative not only enhances the building experience but also fosters a community of creativity and innovation, bringing together enthusiasts from all over the globe.
