The color of fire trucks – Harvard/Tonica
Readers have shared their thoughts on our recent post about the non-red apparatus in MABAS Division 5, specifically mentioning a new chapter for the 1977 Ford/Welch rescue squad from Harvard. One reader provided a detailed account of the truck's journey over the years.
"The Harvard Rescue truck was purchased by the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department in LaSalle County during the late '80s and underwent a full restoration. It was then painted in a striking Chrome Yellow and White color scheme. Later, it was sold to a chemical plant in Henry, Illinois, to serve as part of their hazmat unit. I was one of the firefighters from Tonica who went to Marengo to pick up the truck when we first acquired it. As a not-for-profit organization, Tonica relies entirely on donations and grants, with no government funding."
Here’s a photo of the original 1977 Ford/Welch unit that once served Harvard Rescue Squad. The image was taken by Bill Friedrich.
From Bill Friedrich:
"Here is the rig when it was heading to Tonica. We were glad we captured it on camera during its move. We often travel far and wide to find what we call 'old friends.' Tonica is located at the southern tip of LaSalle County."
This next photo shows the same truck in service with the Tonica Fire Rescue. It was used as an emergency response vehicle and still bears the markings of its former life with the Harvard Rescue Squad.
Bill Friedrich took this shot as well, giving us a glimpse into the truck’s second life. These stories are always fascinating, especially when they highlight the dedication of volunteer fire departments and the long-lasting legacy of these classic vehicles.
