"Cheryl Michalek, fondly known as 'Trauma Mama' for her unique blend of tough yet nurturing approach, was a beacon of learning and compassion for countless first responders. Over several decades, she dedicated herself to teaching emergency medical techniques, influencing not just those in the classroom but entire communities through their work. Cheryl passed away on March 5 at her Riverdale home following a long battle with Parkinson's disease, leaving behind a legacy cherished by many. Her funeral was a poignant affair, attended by firefighters and police officers in full uniform, honoring her memory with solemn respect.
For years, Cheryl would transition directly from her nursing duties at Little Company of Mary Hospital to volunteer her time instructing emergency medical courses in suburban areas. Her dedication never wavered, even as her health began to decline. Midlothian Fire Chief Stephen M. Hotwagner recalls how she emphasized treating every patient with familial care, ensuring they received the dignity and attention they deserved.
Her teaching style was nothing short of legendary. Cheryl wasn't afraid to confront those who exhibited overconfidence or ignorance, challenging them to step up if they believed they knew better. As Dr. Bernie Heilicser of Ingalls Hospital noted, her passion and humility made her a beloved figure in the field. Among her many protégés were notable figures such as three Chicago fire commissioners—James Joyce, Ray Orozco Jr., and Robert Hoff—highlighting her pivotal role in shaping modern emergency response systems.
Beyond her professional achievements, Cheryl was a devoted mother whose priorities were always clear. Sue Stacey, a dispatch supervisor, fondly remembered how Cheryl would dig into her purse for spare change just to ensure her children could enjoy simple pleasures like a pool pass. Though vacations were rare, family dinners remained sacred.
Rick, one of her sons who pursued construction, shared how his mom often hosted informal study sessions for struggling students, offering them guidance beyond academics. Cheryl is survived by two more sons—Scott, a Metra conductor, and Gary, a Chicago firefighter—as well as 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all bearing testament to her enduring influence.
