New fire station for Wheeling

From recent reports on Journal-Topics.com: --- As of this week, plans have begun moving forward to demolish and rebuild Fire Station 23 in Wheeling. On Monday (February 3), village trustees gave the green light on the site plans and approved a special use permit for the project. The existing fire station at 780 Wheeling Road has been around for 42 years and requires significant renovations and upgrades to keep up with the demands of the growing community. Wheeling's fire department covers an area of approximately 10 square miles and serves a population of about 75,000 residents. According to Deputy Fire Chief Michael McGreal, the original structure was designed to accommodate just one firefighting vehicle. With cost estimates for renovations proving to be quite high, officials decided that constructing a completely new facility would be the most efficient and effective solution. The newly proposed station will span an impressive 11,203 square feet and will be built using concrete, featuring a modern design with touches of stone veneer, siding, and accent panels in varying shades of gray, white, brown, and red. The architects incorporated a sleek seam roof, a front canopy entrance, a parking lot on the southern side of the property, and landscaping along the road-facing areas. This future building will sit on village-owned land near Echo Lake, just north of Hintz Road. For the construction to proceed, the trustees also granted a special use permit to allow a new fire station within the I-1 zoning district. It’s worth noting that most fire stations are typically located in business zones, and since the original station was constructed back in the 1970s, it didn’t require such a permit at that time. Additionally, the board approved two variations: reducing the required setback along Wheeling Road from 35 feet to 30 feet, and increasing the maximum height from 30 feet to 33 feet. Once the new station is finished, the fire department plans to adopt a similar design for the upgrade of Fire Station 42 on Dundee Road. This initiative reflects the village's commitment to modernizing its infrastructure while maintaining practicality and aesthetic appeal. --- This story highlights the importance of investing in essential public services like fire stations, which play a critical role in ensuring safety and efficiency for communities.
