New fire station for Wheeling

From recent updates on Journal-Topics.com: Nestled in the heart of Wheeling, plans to demolish and rebuild Fire Station 23 have now moved forward after village trustees gave their green light on both the site plans and a special-use permit last Monday (February 3). This move comes as the existing facility, located at 780 Wheeling Road, has reached its 42nd year and requires significant overhauls to meet the demands of today's community. Serving approximately 75,000 residents across an area of about 10 square miles, Wheeling's fire department plays a crucial role in ensuring safety and security. Deputy Fire Chief Michael McGreal noted that the current structure was initially designed to accommodate only one fire truck. With renovation costs proving prohibitively high, the decision was made to go ahead with a complete rebuild. The newly proposed station will span an impressive 11,203 square feet, constructed using cement and strategically placed on the northern section of the village-owned land near Echo Lake, just north of Hintz Road. Architecturally, the design incorporates elements such as stone veneer, siding, and fiber-cement accent panels in tones of gray, white, brown, and red. Additional features include a sleek seam roof, a front canopy for the entrance, a parking lot positioned on the southern side of the property, and well-thought-out landscaping along the street-facing areas. To facilitate this construction, trustees have approved a special-use permit to allow the establishment of a fire station within the I-1 zoning district—a rarity since most fire stations are typically found in commercial zones. Interestingly, when the original station was built in the 1970s, no such permit was necessary. Further adjustments were granted regarding the setbacks along Wheeling Road, reducing the required distance from 35 feet to 30 feet, while also allowing for an increase in height from 30 feet to 33 feet. These modifications ensure that the new station will blend seamlessly into its surroundings while maintaining functionality and efficiency. Looking ahead, once the new station is operational, similar plans are in place to revamp Fire Station 42 on Dundee Road using the same architectural blueprint. This initiative underscores Wheeling's commitment to modernizing its infrastructure to better serve its growing population. Residents can expect a state-of-the-art facility that not only meets but exceeds expectations in terms of durability and aesthetic appeal. It’s a testament to how forward-thinking planning can enhance public services while preserving the charm and character of the community.
