High angle rescue in Chicago, 6-2-19

Late last Sunday afternoon (June 2), firefighters from Chicago's 6th Battalion faced a challenging rescue scenario at the intersection of 53rd and Union. A tree trimmer found himself stuck, hanging upside down from a tree at a fairly manageable height but with a fractured leg. Truck 18 quickly moved into position, using its ladder to support the injured man while waiting for additional help from Squad 5 and Tower Ladder 39.
The initial task of keeping the man stable while he was still suspended proved difficult, as his weight had to be carefully managed by Truck 18’s aerial ladder. It took some time to untangle him from the branches, given the complexity of the situation. Eventually, Tower Ladder 39 maneuvered its basket underneath, allowing the trapped man to be safely lowered to the ground. The entire operation lasted around 45 minutes.
One of the biggest challenges for TL39 was accessing the area where the incident occurred. The only viable route was through a nearby vacant lot that was extremely soft due to all the recent heavy rains. To stabilize their rig during this delicate operation, they used fence posts that were already being installed on the lot.
