This morning brought tragic news from Lake Michigan as severe weather claimed the life of one swimmer and left another missing. The incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. at Park Avenue Beach in Highland Park, where a group of ten individuals participated in a cold-weather swim session. Reports indicate that these swimmers encountered unexpectedly rough conditions, leading to two of them becoming distressed.
Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene. Unfortunately, an unresponsive 46-year-old man from Itasca was recovered by firefighters using specialized diving equipment. He was transported to Highland Park Hospital but was declared deceased upon arrival. Authorities have yet to release his name pending notification of family members.
Meanwhile, a 52-year-old woman from Elgin remains missing despite extensive search efforts. High winds gusting up to 40 mph and waves towering over ten feet made it impossible for boats to navigate safely. Firefighters conducted searches along the shoreline, while a Coast Guard helicopter joined the operation around 11:45 a.m.
As daylight waned, the search effort was temporarily suspended late Sunday afternoon.
