Army private receives welcome home
Last Friday, the community of Vernon Hills came together to honor a local hero as U.S. Army Private Andrew Perez returned home from his deployment in Iraq. Members of the Vernon Hills Police Department, Countryside Fire Protection District, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire District joined forces for a heartfelt welcome home escort, showing their pride and gratitude for his service.
The event featured a large aerial flag displayed over Deerpath Road by Countryside and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods firefighters, symbolizing the town's support for its hometown soldier. A procession of police vehicles escorted Pfc. Perez, who was welcomed with a wave of cheers and well-wishes from residents.
Perez, a 2006 graduate of Vernon Hills High School, had been serving with the 37th Infantry Battalion near Al Saad, Iraq. He returned to the U.S. just two weeks prior to the celebration. During the event, he was presented with a proclamation from the village, gift cards from local businesses including Olive Garden and Westfield Hawthorn, and countless messages of appreciation from the community.
Firefighters from the Countryside Fire Protection District lined up in front of their station to pay tribute to his service, while members of the local fire departments joined in the celebration, showing their solidarity with the returning soldier.
This touching event highlighted not only the dedication of our military personnel but also the strong sense of community that defines Vernon Hills. It was a powerful reminder of the love and support that surrounds those who serve our country.
