Public Company Information: NASDAQ: ADSK  HONOLULU–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In celebration of U.S. military veterans, the National Park Service (NPS) and Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), collaborated to host a press event today, revealing early findings from the first in-depth survey of the USS Arizona and its memorial in 30 years, along with newly created 3D models. This initiative aligns perfectly with Autodesk’s mission to empower people to imagine, design, and build a better future. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, the project aims to preserve history and enhance public understanding. The survey, expected to be completed later this year, will offer a more detailed look at this historic site while supporting ongoing conservation efforts. At the Memorial Day event, a 3D-printed model of the USS Arizona was displayed, showcasing details that had never been seen before on paper. Additionally, highly detailed 3D models of a cooking pot and a Coke bottle—both originally on the ship for 72 years—were also presented. These models included intricate textures, colors, and even barnacles on the cooking pot. Autodesk and NPS hope to complete a full 3D model of the entire ship by the end of the year. “This technology brings the legacy of the USS Arizona to life in ways we couldn’t have imagined before,†said National Park Service Superintendent Paul DePrey. “The USS Arizona is one of America’s most sacred historical sites. As its caretaker, the NPS has a responsibility to share its story with generations to come. 3D models allow people to see and touch these detailed replicas, which will play a key role in our educational programs.†Also in attendance was Don Stratton, a 92-year-old survivor of the attack on the USS Arizona, one of only nine remaining survivors. At just 19 years old during the Pearl Harbor attack, he and six others crossed a burning deck via a rope to reach the USS Vestal. Stratton suffered severe burns over 70% of his body. When shown the 3D model of the cooking pot for the first time, Stratton remarked, “That’s incredible. I don’t think anyone who was in the galley survived that day. It was all about survival at the time, and after that, it was nearly impossible to return. Now, when I remember, it feels a bit easier. I believe this will make a real impact on many people.†Stratton’s son, Randy, added, “You can’t replicate these artifacts. They represent the beginning and end of the war, and the fact that life still exists on the Arizona.†Don Stratton concluded, “I hope people remember all the shipmates still aboard the Arizona, and those who gave their lives for this great country.†Approximately 900 of the 1,777 crew members who died remain inside the ship, so all work must be done with extreme care. To minimize disturbance, the NPS is using Autodesk’s reality computing technology, underwater photogrammetry, subsea LiDAR, high-resolution SONAR, and above-water laser scanning to create an accurate digital representation of the site. “The USS Arizona Memorial is a vital but fragile piece of history,†said Brian Mathews, vice president at Autodesk. “Reality Computing bridges the physical and digital worlds, and we see great potential in helping the NPS and preservationists worldwide capture and share these stories for future generations.†Other organizations involved in the project include HDR, Sam Hirota, Inc., Oceanic Imaging Consultants, Inc., 3DatDepth, Shark Marine Technologies, Inc., the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Navy Mobile Diving Salvage Unit One.
